Mass Balance Method

Mass balance allows fossil feedstocks to be mixed with greener alternatives but does not change the existing production process.

The ISCC has developed several systems of accounting for accredited alternative feedstocks, with each reflecting the industrial realities involved in specific sectors and manufacturing models. CCL Secure has chosen the mass balance method because it offers the flexibility central banks need to gradually reduce their use of fossil feedstocks over time.

Under the mass balance method, certified alternative feedstocks and fossil raw materials are physically mixed throughout the value chain, but quantified and tracked with rigorous bookkeeping. This provides central banks with accurate information about the percentage of final product produced using sustainable feedstocks, as opposed to fossil raw materials.
